Guide for Croatia

Croatia is situated in south-east side of Europe
and covers an area of 56.542 km2 with 31.067 km2 of territorial waters. The
coast including islands, cliffs and reefs is 5.835 km long. There
are 1.185 island, islets and reefs in the Adriatic sea, so it is not strange
that Croatia is known as a land of thousand islands. Each of the islands has its
own particular story and place in history. In spite a great number only 66 of
them are inhabited.
Because
of it's position that stretches from the foot of the Alps in the north-west and
the Plannonian Plain in the east, over the mountain range Dinara in the central
region, to the Adriatic Coast in south, Croatia covers an area of great
diversity. All these has made a land a place of rare beauty. What makes Croatian
people proud is the untouchable nature protected in numerous nature reserves and
8 national parks (Islands, Brijuni, Kornati and Mljet, River Krka, Plitvice
Lakes, Paklenica canyon, Risnjak wooded mountain massive and north part of the
mountain massive Velebit).

MURTER
The island of Murter belongs
to the group of northern Dalmatian islands, lying between the cities of
Zadar and Šibenik.
How to get to Murter -
click
here: The island of Murter belongs to the North Dalmatian
group of islands, which contains almost 40 % of all Croatian islands and is the
most dense archipelago in both the Adriatic and the Mediterranean. (
One hour by car from Split)
Murter is located
in the northwest of both the Šibenik archipelago, as well as the Šibenik county.
Only 6 meters away from land and connected with it by a bascule bridge, the
island is very easy to reach, which makes it even more attractive. There are
four towns located on the island - the older ones, Murter and Jezera, and the
newer ones, Tisno and Betina. Most of the island is covered with age- old olive
trees and fig-trees, which are the main traditional crops grown by the natives.
Mean land, which used to be the cause of hard life and poverty, has turned into
an attraction - desolate sandy bays have become the most visited beaches, and
Kornati have been recognized as one of the most beautiful and best preserved
landscapes in the world.
The island of Murter is famous for its sandy and gravel- beaches, such as
Slanica, Kosirina, Čigrađa, Podvršak, Lovišća... There is also a large number of
small bays hidden from view and far away from the heat of larger beaches.

OPATIJA is a well known tourist resort in
Croatia. It is situated on the eastern coast of Istria in Rijeka Bay on the foot
of mountain Učka (1.400 m). It was named after a Benedectine abbey (Opatija
in Croatian) of St Jacobs. Climatic conditions in Opatija are favorable, with relatively
mild winters. In early 19th century Opatija was the winter and health resort of
the worldly Central Europe. The hotel "Kvarner" built in 1884 is the
first hotel in Croatia and one of the first in Europe. The average temperature
(in winter 4,7 in summer 23,3) allows successful growth of camellias, magnolias,
palms, bamboos and other subtropics plants in its parks.

USEFUL INFORMATION ABOUT CROATIA
Berth fees in marinas: Fees are charged in Croatian
marinas for berths and other services. They are usually fixed and
published in the autumn for the following year. This Price List
contains separate tables for daily, monthly and annual fees for
mooring berths and land storage places. All prices are based on the
vessel's length over all (LOA.). Exception is made in case of annual
berth prices, where the price is determined by the vessel's width as
well. Marinas reserves the right to check the reported dimensions of
the vessel. For multi-hull vessels (catamarans and trimarans) the fees
may be increased by 50%, depending on availability of free capacities
in the chosen marina.
Mooring fees in public harbours: On public piers in
harbours under municipal authority, the local authorities have the
right to charge mooring fees. The amount of the fee depends on the
size of the boat and the length of pier it occupies, which means that
yachts mooring alongside the pier will pay more than those mooring
stern of bows to. When berthing “in a pack” (several yachts mooring
alongside each other), the mooring fee is charged for every yacht. The
amount of the fee is determined by the local authority can vary from
one harbor to another.
Mooring fees in bays: In some areas, the local
authorities charge mooring fees for vessels moored in bays under their
authority. In return, garbage is collected and, in some places,
groceries delivered. The extent to which fees can be charged without
any service being provided will in future be regulated by law. Persons
collecting mooring fees must identify themselves by producing a
printed receipt.
Buying food: Shopping for food presents no problems
along the coast or on the islands. All marinas and harbour have
well-supplied supermarkets. However, during prolonged spells of bad
weather there can be a shortage of fresh vegetables and bread on small
islands which do not have a regular ferry service. Food prices are
comparable to those in Europe. Restaurants can be more expensive on
small islands.
Fuel: is easily available both on roads and in
harbours. All types of petrol, including unleaded petrol, and diesel
are available; however, unleaded petrol pumps and less common on
piers. Petrol stations are temporarily closed for safety reasons when
they are being supplied with petrol from tankers. During off-season
periods, opening hours of petrol stations can be limited to a few,
usually morning, hours. During the main season, and especially in the
morning hours, the large number of customers may cause queuing and
considerable waiting times at petrol stations.
Water and electricity in Croatian harbours and marinas:
All Croatian marinas and some harbours have water and
electricity hook-ups on the pontoon-piers. Water:
water connections are usually 1 inch in diameter, 3 inch diameter
connections are much less common. Because of possible water shortages
in the summer months, most Croatian marinas require yachts to use
hoses with taps.
Electricity: In Croatia the current is 220 V
AC. In marinas and public harbours (as well as camping grounds),
three-pin "Euro-plugs" are used. In some marinas (Punat, Kremik) a
number of pillars have ‘conventional’ safety sockets. The power
pillars in some marinas are so wide apart (e.g. in Zut, Piskera,
Palmizana) that extension leads with insulated connectors (storm,
rain) are needed. The number of power points is sometimes
insufficient for all yachts that may need electricity at the same
time. Well-insulated extension leads with connection elements should
therefore be carried on board every yacht.
