A Day Sailing on the Thalassa Sailing EcoTour Charter

Participating in a dolphin and whale watching tour is a unique experience! We will have the time to teach you the essentials of the cetacean research methods. The initial purpose is to enable you to distinguish the different species that we will meet. In the specific sea area the species we most frequently encounter are Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), Stripped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba), Common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), Risso's dolphins (Grampus griseus), Cuvier's beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris) and Sperm Whales (Physeter catodon). There have also been reports of Fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus).

The island complex is also a sanctuary for the Mediterranean sea turtle (Caretta caretta) while the sight of Monk seal (Monachus monachus) is not considered a surprise. The crew will give you the necessary guidelines on the ways that we distinguish the certain Cetacean species.

The next thing to do is to record their movements. The ship will be equipped with the latest version of digital maps and software with the ability to record every day's tracks and the specific positions of dolphin contacts (sightings). We will be able to gather information about their frequency and distribution in the field area, which are statistically analyzed in the laboratory and can give us many clues about their population size and their abundance. Are they living permanently in the specific sea area, are they immigrating, which are the reasons of their presence there, which is the structure of their societies, are they in danger by human activities and pollution? These are some of the questions that need to be answered. You will have the opportunity to reveal these secrets.

Your guide will acquaint you with the most important method of recognizing the specific individuals: the photo-identification method (PID), which is harmless and is widely used in order to create a well informed database with characteristic photographs of dorsal fins. Dorsal fins are the dolphins' fingerprints and can reveal the identity of an individual. They often have scars that are permanent and can be captured by the photographic lens, in order to separate the individuals and begin studying them in a more continuous basis.

Every boat is also equipped with the most important tool for entering in their isolated universe: a hydrophone, which is needed for bioacoustics research. Dolphins and whales have adopted the most sophisticated way of conceiving their environment by using echolocation. It is a biosonar that enables them to form the shapes of the objects, inside the water. They often transmit high frequency sounds, which are reflected by the specific object and then are collected by their rostrum, which is the first part of a complex apparatus that guides the signal to the brain for further analysis. This is a rather usual adaptation in the animal world but as far as the Cetaceans are concerned, it has an extreme scientific interest due to their interspecies communication. Echolocation is used as a "language" amongst them, as a navigation and orientation tool and finally as a feeding instrument due to their ability to catch fish by transmitting "booms" over 230 decibels. Our itineraries will follow the tracks of our friends: dolphins and whales! When someone is found near them discovers serenity and liberty. Their plays, sounds and their interactions are miraculous. When we notice their freedom and their sensitivity when they are socializing, it's sure that our perspective of our modern lives will be reexamined. There is no anxiety, no stress in their world, simply the natural need for communication and contact.
